I started this piece in the very early spring anticipating the growth waiting to burst through the dormant earth. My material of preference continues to be (broken) china and ceramic with a particular love of Japanese porcelain and china. The the delicate flowers and colorful patterns enthrall me. As with most Picasiette, I cut all the individual flowers and patterns by hand. Besides the dominant use of china, this piece also includes Smalti, stained glass, Van Gogh glass, pearls, beads, fusions, prism glass, and agate slices. The substrate is a shelf which I mounting on an old wooden cabinet door so that I could frame it out.
My process is to choose from my large stash of cut out flowers and patterned plates , and once doing so, let it evolve with no pre-drawn plans except in this case, of flowing movement in an upward direction. The piece “grows” as I mix and match materials. Over the course of many months, with the piece sitting out, I add, rearrange and remove pieces until it feels finished. Most of my mosaics tend to be abstract or representationally abstract..
